Why slab leaks are easy to miss

The five signs to watch for

1. A water bill that keeps climbing with no change in how much water you use.
2. A warm or hot spot on the floor, often a sign the hot water line is leaking.
3. Puddles or damp carpet that return after you dry them.
4. A faint hissing or running-water sound when every fixture is off.
5. Water pressure that drops or fluctuates through the house.

The meter test you can do today

Turn off the supply valves behind every toilet, then look at your water meter. Wait fifteen minutes without using water. If the dial still moves, water is leaving the system somewhere you cannot see.
